How To Build a Culture of Employee Well-Being & Performance

Nothing determines business success (or failure) more than workplace culture…

We know that not only does good sleep, healthy eating and regular exercise build a more stress-resilient ecosystem that has fewer days off, it generally will contribute to better mood, energy levels and overall levels of productivity.

Hence, corporate health programs have become so popular in the last decade with fortune 500 companies, as business leaders have identified the link between optimal health, productivity, and overall competency in the office.

Here are three key reasons you should implement a health and wellbeing culture into your business today…

  1. More energy equals greater productivity and performance

If better sleep, good nutrition, and exercise give you greater energy, it will inevitably trickle over into employee output, not just input.

Having someone who works long hours, needs 5 coffees, has brain fog, and is yawning from mid-morning is highly unlikely to perform as well as the person who operates the same number of hours but is rested, not yawning and has a clear mind!

The level of performance from your team will always outweigh the amount of time, as outlined in figure 1 below.

  1. Strong in body and mind, equals more resilient to stress

A healthier body is less likely to get sick than an unhealthy body.

A study in 2014 from the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neuroscience at the University of Chicago concluded that regular exercisers are more resistant to the emotional effects of acute stress, which in turn, may protect them against diseases related to chronic stress burden (1).

The practical application of this is that if exercise reduces stress’s impact on our body and mind, you will have a team that gets sick less, along with a greater likelihood of a reduction in overall mental health issues, meaning they miss fewer days at work!

  1. The happier they are, the more they will go over and above the call of duty

This one is a no-brainer because if someone is happy in the workplace, they are more likely to go over and above the call of duty.

As an entrepreneur, trying to build your tribe is crucial to the long-term scalability of your business, so having people go into battle for you daily goes a long way to contributing to the complete success of your vision.

Encourage your team members to do simple things such as:

  1. Complete 8-10,000 steps per day
  2. Eat only until they are feeling full and not bloated
  3. Get 7-8 hours of sleep per night
  4. Do some strength training 3-4 times per week
  5. Get outside in the sun and nature for no less than 30 minutes per day

Now I assure you the performance of your team members and overall business will flourish if they take better care of their bodies and implement some of these simple tips into their daily schedule.

In Summary

Hopefully, now you can see the importance of health and well-being when building a high-performance workplace and remember, it does not have to be overly complicated!
